Titans Drop Region Opener
Darlington, SC — Trinity Collegiate fell to Hilton Head Christian Academy 9–2 on Tuesday as the Eagles used a big early inning and strong pitching to secure the win.
Hilton Head Christian Academy broke the game open in the second inning, plating four runs to take control. Will Mahl started the rally with an RBI double, and Jackson Richardson followed with a two-run single. Later in the inning, Chip Hetzel added another run after tagging up to extend the Eagles' lead.
Trinity starting pitcher Gavin Holt (Florence, SC/Florence Christian School) battled through four innings, striking out five while allowing seven hits and six runs. Hilton Head Christian Academy starter Colt Spargur proved difficult to solve, going six innings while allowing just two hits and two runs, only one earned, while striking out 12.
The Titans' offense was led by Garrison Copeland (Hartsville, SC/Hartsville Middle School), who drove in a run while going 1-for-3 from the three spot in the lineup. Davidson Lynch (Florence, SC/All Saints' Episcopal Day School), Copeland, and Robert Mack (Hartsville, SC/Hartsville Middle School) each recorded a hit for Trinity. Defensively, the Titans also turned a double play during the game.
Hilton Head Christian Academy finished with nine hits and showed patience at the plate, drawing nine walks. Slaide Burd drove in three runs from the middle of the lineup, while Richardson paced the Eagles with two hits. Hetzel reached base four times via walk.
The Eagles also applied pressure on the bases, stealing five bags, including three from Burd. Hilton Head Christian Academy played clean defense as well, committing no errors, with Roman Colella recording a game-high 14 defensive chances.
Trinity Collegiate will look to bounce back Friday when the Titans travel to face Hilton Head Christian Academy again. First pitch in Bluffton is set for 7 PM.
