Titans Trounce Stallions for Olson's First Win as Head Coach
McBee, SC- The Trinity Collegiate Titans rode a dominant performance on the mound from Sophomore John William Gainey (Florence, SC/Laurence Manning Academy) to an 11–1 victory over the Lee Central Stallions on Tuesday in the second round of the McBee Tournament.
Gainey was electric from the first pitch, striking out 12 over five innings of no-hit baseball. The right-hander allowed just one unearned run while walking two, keeping the Stallions off balance all afternoon.
Trinity wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first. An early Lee Central error plated a run, and Senior Bennett Bradshaw added another with a sacrifice fly to give the Titans a 2–0 advantage.
The lead grew to 3–0 in the second inning when Sophomore Miller Buchanan (Greenville, SC/Carolina Elementary School) delivered an RBI single.
The Titans broke the game open in the fourth, erupting for five runs on three hits. Junior Robert Mack (Hartsville, SC/Hartsville Middle School) sparked the rally with a triple to score one, Junior Brody Phillips (Florence, SC/Briggs Elementary School) followed with an RBI double, and Junior Ross Meadows (Hartsville, SC/Hartsville Middle School) added a run-scoring single. An additional run crossed on an error, and the Titans capped the inning with an aggressive steal of home.
Trinity tallied nine hits in the contest. Phillips, Buchanan, and Meadows each recorded two hits, while Bradshaw, Phillips, Garrison Copeland (Hartsville, SC/Hartsville Middle School), Meadows, and Mack drove in runs. Copeland swiped two bases as part of a six-steal effort for the Titans.
Lee Central managed one double play defensively, but the Titans' combination of dominant pitching, timely hitting, and aggressive base running proved too much to overcome.
Trinity will be back in action Thursday as they travel to face the McBee Panthers to conclude the McBee Tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
